On February 19, 2006, the Tokyo University of Science entered into an academic exchange agreement with the Nicolaus Copernicus University of Poland. This date-February 19-also marks the birthday of the astronomer for whom the university was named.The Nicolaus Copernicus University is a general university that was established in Torun, Poland, in 1945. It has a student body of approximately 34,000 and a teaching staff of some 1,400, and is comprised of 14 science- and arts-related faculties. Torun features a beautiful medieval townscape that was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1997. It is also the birthplace of Copernicus, who espoused the heliocentric theory.
